Shark City in Republic of Palau | Scary concept but friendly creatures

General Information:

This finger-shaped reef is the westernmost point of the Palau Islands. The entire reef area is known as Shark City even though it consists of several independent dive sites. Important Notice: Due to strong currents and open ocean swells, each diver is required to carry a Safety Sausage as part of their dive equipment.

Reef Formation:
Shark City reef consists of sheer vertical walls, moderate slopes, and canyons. The reef runs from east to west, then it curves south to create a corner with a plateau on the top. The walls and the slopes drop down to 120 to150 feet (40 to 50 m) before they merge with the sandy runoff.
Marine life:
Many Gray Reef Sharks, schools of barracuda, snappers, and Unicornfish patrol the walls and corners of the reef. Clouds of Pyramid Butterflyfish, Square Anthias, Moorish Idols, and Yellowtail Fusiliers are found along the edge and on top of the reef. The plateau and the upper walls host large schools of silver barracuda and snappers. Spotted Eagle Rays and Napoleon Wrasse are often seen here as well. Large patches of healthy lettuce corals can be found on top of the plateau at 70 to 80 feet (23 to 27 meters). The canyon, encountered on the South to North dive is rich with marine life. In recent years the canyon has been nicknamed Hammerhead Point due to numerous encounters with Great Hammerheads.
Diving:
Depends on the direction of the current the Dive Guide will start the dive from one of the two mooring buoys or at another location along the wall. Each dive site is completely different offering different sections of the reef wall to explore. As a reference point, the two (2) white mooring buoys mark the northern section of this site. East to West: The dive will start east of the northern buoy. Drop down and follow the wall at 60 - 80 feet (20 to 27 m) keeping the reef to your left. This is a relatively deep dive; the reef starts at 55 feet (17 m) dropping down to 150 feet (50 m). The reef gets deeper as you reach the corner. South to North: At this site, a dark blue area in the water outlines a deep canyon that starts at 20 feet (7 m) and cuts the reef vertically down to 200 feet (65 m). From the canyon, follow the wall to the north toward the corner, keeping the wall on your right. Watch your air consumption and bottom time.
Fascinating Facts:
Currents: The currents along the reef can be very strong and unpredictable. For more information regarding the tidal patterns of Palau, check the Blue Corner tide and current section.
Before Blue Corner gained in popularity, this reef was Palau’s prime spot for shark diving. The name Shark City is the result of an article, by Skin Diver Magazine, published in the early 1980’s.
Location: Western reef of Palau, southwest of Ulong Island.
Distance from Koror: 23 miles (37 kilometers) from Koror. 40-50 minutes by a speedboat.
Level of Diving Experience: Advanced.
Diving Depth Summary: Top of the reef: 45 feet (15 meters).

Reef wall: 45 to 150 feet (15 to 50 meters).

Corner: 90 feet (30 meters).

Visibility: 60 to 150 feet (20 to 50 meters) depending on the direction of the tide.

Grand Tour To Italy | Italy travel guide 2018 | Places to visit in Italy as a tourist

Much of the country's appeal is derived from its history. With ancient architecture and a history of pioneering art, fashion, and food, the icing on the cake is its beautiful coastlines and the unbeatable Mediterranean climate.

Italy is home to many internationally renowned tourist attractions and you'll need a very long list to tick them all off. Start by visiting classic sites including the Leaning Tower of Pisa, Rome's Colosseum, the Sistine Chapel in the Vatican, and Cinque Terre, a collection of pretty villages located along the Italian Riviera.

It's hard to pick Italy's highlight but Florence is definitely near the top of most people's lists. A UNESCO-protected city, Florence is also ranked as one of the most beautiful cities in the world courtesy of its fabulous architecture and stunning art collections.

The Tuscan town is largely renowned for being the birthplace of the Renaissance movement - an artistic rebirth which produced Michelangelo and Leonardo De Vinci's finest work. Make sure to visit Michelangelo's most famous statue, 'David', housed in the Florence Academy of Fine Arts.
Just a short trip north of Florence you'll find the romantic river city of Venice. Situated on 118 islands linked by a series of bridges and canals, Venice is known the world over as 'The Floating City'.

Take a gondola ride through its canals to experience the city's breathtaking architecture, or visit Venice's most impressive church, St Mark's Basilica.

Steeped in history is Italy's capital Rome. The Colosseum is a monument to 'The Eternal City's' ancient history, while Old Masters such as Michelangelo, Caravaggio and Bernini are exhibited at Capitoline Museums.

Meanwhile, the Pope holds regular audiences in St Peter's Square and Michelangelo's masterpiece in the Sistine Chapel remains one of the great artworks of all time - that's not an exaggeration!

South of Rome, the landscape gets even more impressive as the weather becomes more perfect. Looking as if it's about to tumble into the ocean at any moment, check out the Amalfi Coast's stunning cliff-face architecture. You can forget your climbing boots because many hotels operate lifts right the way down the steep cliffs to private beaches.

Further south the famous island of Sicily is surrounded by deep blue oceans which contrast markedly with the whitewashed buildings dotted along the island's cliff-tops.

Some of the most beautiful vistas in Italy abound in the Sicilian towns of Palmero, Messina, and Catania, which maintain a distinct way of life separate from the hustle and bustle of the mainland.

Italy tours traditionally traverse the country's unique geography and you haven't seen all of Italy until you make a trip to the Alps, situated along the country's border with France and Switzerland. A ski pass at Cervinia even allows you to ski across the border for a hot chocolate in Zermatt, Switzerland!

As the birthplace of the Armani, Fendi, Gucci, Prada, and Dolce and Gabbana labels, Italy is synonymous with high fashion. Much of the best shopping can be found in oh-so-classy Milan but also in small towns will you find designer and sometimes outlet stores.

Lake Como is the favorite lake in the world and Lenno may be favorite town. Quiet and unpretentious, it’s lined with casual lakeside eateries for the afternoon. The lake is surprisingly warm in the summer and there’s even a small sandy beach for sunbathing.

You can also climb to the top of 1,700-metre Monte Tremezzo for great views of the cobalt-blue Lake Como.

Of course, an Italy travel guide isn't complete without mentioning the mouthwatering Italian food. If you have a vice for pizza or pasta, then where better to dine than its motherland? Some notable foodie destinations in Italy include Naples for pizza, the Abruzzo region for pasta and Florence for gelato.

Accessed by boat, Navagio beach is the site of a famed 1980 shipwreck resting in a sandy cove framed by cliffs.

The Venetians, who ruled Zákynthos from 1484 to 1797, called the island “Fioro di Levante” (flower of the East) as there are over 7,000 species of flowers on Zákynthos. The third largest island of the Ionian Sea, after Corfu and Kefaloniá, is internationally known as “Zante”. Zákynthos is said to have been the island’s first inhabitant and the ancient acropolis is attributed to him. He was the son of Dardanos who ruled the ancient kingdom of Frigia. A Venetian fort was built at later times on the site.
Beautiful Zakynthos, also known by its Italian name Zante, has become dominated along its southern and southeastern shoreline by heavy package tourism. Once you leave the long sandy beaches of those regions behind, however, and set off to explore the rest of the island, you'll discover plenty of forested wilderness and traditional rural villages. Some attractive lower-key bases lie just beyond the larger, run-of-the-mill resorts, including Keri and Limni Keriou in the remote southwest, and Agios Nikolaos and Cape Skinari in the far north, but it’s the spectacular scenery of the rugged west coast, where mighty limestone cliffs plummet down to unreal turquoise waters, that’s the true highlight.

Places to visit in Zakynthos:

  • The Solomos Square surrounded by buildings with characteristic traditional architectural features of the island, arch-shaped windows, and arcades. The bust of D. Solomos national poet of Greece dominates in the center. Here you can also find the Public Library (with 55.000 volumes), the Post-Byzantine Museum of Zante exhibiting treasures such as statues trimmed with gold, icons and art woodcuts.
  • The Post- Byzantine Museum of Zante in Solomos square, exhibits treasures such as statues trimmed with gold, icons and art woodcuts.
  • The Aghios Markos square. Here, in 1797, the revolutionaries (popolaroi) burnt the Libro d’ Oro and planted the tree of freedom. This paved square is the main meeting point for locals and visitors. Here, you will find the Museum of Solomos, Kalvos and Eminent Zakynthians which also hosts the best of the Greek national poet, created by Georgios Broutos in 1902.
  • The coastal road is known as Strata Marina (K. Lomvardou street), which is one of the most frequented parts of the city, with cafes, bars, and restaurants, from the Solomos Square up to the church of the patron-saint Aghios Dionysios.
  • Rouga: Its name is Alexandros Romas street, starting at Aghios Markos Square crossing almost the whole town. This street with the impressive arcades has been the main commercial center of the city for centuries.
  • The Stranis hill, 2 km away from the town, offering a great view. Here, the poet Dionysios Solomos inspired the ‘Hymn to Liberty’ (later the Greek national anthem) and the “Free Besieged” attending the siege of the city of Messolonghi.
  • The Venetian Castle situated on a hill overhanging the town in the place of the old acropolis named Psofis.

Some of the Remarkable churches in Zakynthos:

  • Aghios Dionysios (at the new pier of the port): where the relic of the patron saint of the island is kept in a silver larnax.
  • Aghios Nikolaos tou Molou (Solomou Square): a church of Renaissance order (17th century) with a belfry dating back to the Byzantine period. Aghios Dionysios lived here in 1853.
  •  Panaghia  Pikardiotissa at the outskirts of the castle.
  • Aghios Georgios: The army commanders Kolokotronis, Nikitaras, Fotomaras as well as other fighters of the 1821 Revolution took their vows on the icon which is kept in this church.
  • Aghios Markos (1516): The belfry of this Catholic church situated at the Aghiou Markou Square is a copy of the one of Saint Mark’s Basilica in Venice.

Famous Cultural events:

Carnival: A traditional town crier goes around the island proclaiming the program of the Carnival festivities. On the last Sunday of the Carnival is the procession of the Carnival King. The festivities end with the “Mask Funeral”.

Litany and artistic events in the memory of Aghios Dionysios on August 24th and December 17th.

Easter: The Holy Week in Zakynthos has its own character with ancient customs and an exceptional rite as far as the religious ceremonies are concerned.

The celebration of Holy Week on Zakynthos Island is considered to be unique and unforgettable both for locals and visitors to the island. At noon, on Good Friday, crowds of worshippers take part in the procession of the Crucified through the town.

It took them some time to complete the building of their bungalows. They began by cutting all the coconut trees down to the stumps to clear the area but left all the other older trees. It has taken them two years to complete the removal of all coconut trees and stumps, the construction of four bungalows, two cottages, a restaurant along the creek and all other buildings. As a close-knit family, they have all put in their ideas and thoughts into the development of their unique bungalows.

M&A Eco-Beach Bungalows are in the North of the main island, it is still an undeveloped area that has not been affected by the development of the island. Here you can still enjoy pristine and natural foliage everywhere you look.
